Force in the Republic of Vietnam: Specialist Four Majer distin-
guished himself by valorous actions while serving as a sniper for
Company B, 1st Battalion (Mechanized), 61st Infantry, on 3 April
1970. That day Company B had maneuvered across a hill in northern
Quang Tri Province and established a defensive position on the
hillside when they started to receive rocket and mortar fire.
Company A was positioned approximately 500 meters to the front of
Company B and was also receiving hostile mortar fire. Specialist
Majer scanned the surrounding hills with his sniper scope and
Located the enemy mortar tube, some 800 meters away, that was
viciously pounding Company A's position. Specialist Majer braved
hostile indirect fire to position himself in an exposed area in
order to fire into the mortar site. With profound expertise
Specialist Majer shot and hit both enemy gunners and knocked the
mortar tube over. His timely and efficient action prevented fur-
ther enemy fire and undoubtedly reduced casualties. Specialist
Majer's courage and professionalism is in keeping with the
highest traditions of the military service and reflect great cre-
dit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
